Get to know Mcubed-Who Am I!

Brandon Johnson Aka Mcubed is originally from Tulsa, OK. He is currently based in Atlanta, GA

He is inspired by Hip Hop, R&B, Reggae, and Afrobeats for his music productions. What inspired him to create? "I would say the songs I create don’t come from me but through me. I find myself waking up in the middle of the night at times with catchy hooks that I record or write down before I forget".

His previous musical projects include his first single, Who Am I (Insight to M³ AKA Mcubed and his life story), Kickback (A get together with friends over a reverse guitar tempo), his Sound (Rap with a Reggae Hook), Laughable Flashback (Paying Homage to some of the most famous comedians), On My Body (Rap infused with R&B vocals), and Wind Down (An Afro-Beat with lyrical content)

Mcubed's journey to creating song after song. One never knows what is around the corner and what the next song will sound like. He is motivated by the way people respond to his music. Mcubed career as a musician began with me recording multiple hooks on my phone. In the end, He decided he should release these songs for the world to hear. Otherwise, they would remain in silence. Listen to "Who Am I?" on his album. It's an anthem about overcoming obstacles and achieving greatness.

Q&A with the artist:

  1. How did you get started in the music business? The project began with two of my cousins. I stepped in to finance my older cousin’s rap music by purchasing equipment for a studio. Shortly afterward, he asked me to be a part of the song. They were shocked that I could write and rap.

  2. How would you describe the music that you typically create? The music I create is usually a blend of different genres and styles. I like to combine elements of rock, blues, jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music to produce original compositions that are both catchy and interesting. I strive to write music that is both emotionally resonant and rhythmically engaging. My goal is to create something unique yet accessible for everyone.

  3. What is the current project about? My current project consists of six songs, each catering to a different thought process. Overall it’s about self-reflection. In every song, I try to incorporate a part of my life experience to create a unique song.

  4. How do you feel it will inspire others? I feel my music will inspire people to see past their shortcomings and look ahead. Oftentimes, the most adverse circumstances in life are preparing you for greater things in the future.

  5. What is your creative process like? Regarding my creative process, I like to work when inspired. Sometimes I have an idea for a hook for a song in my head. It is often accompanied by a melody and sometimes by a beat. It’s about writing down those inspiring moments. The next piece of the puzzle is marrying the right beat to the song. The beat has to move me. It’s the first thing that people hear. My next focus is the hook of the song. Sometimes I strive for thought-provoking lyrics and other times it’s about a catchy sound. The verses to my songs are the final piece of the puzzle that brings it all together.

  6. Who would you most like to collaborate with? I would love to collaborate with KRS-One on my song Who Am I? I have heard him speak and know that he is the most appropriate person to convey the message of my hook. I would also like to work with any current and independent artists.

  7. If you had the chance to open a show for any artist who would it be? It would have to be the influential rapper NAS or Eminem.

  8. What is one message you would give to your fans? It is truly the fans that keep me motivated. Fans are inspiring to me. When someone appreciates your art, it’s a fulfilling experience and I would like to say thank you to those that took the time to listen.

  9. What is the most useless talent you have? As far as I know, I am not in possession of unnecessary items. LOL! If I had to guess I would say my useless talent would be my high school wrestling talent. It is of no use at this time.

  10. Do you sing in the shower? Sometimes I use my shower time as a creative thought process. It helps me relax and think. So yes, I sing in the shower and come up with hooks to songs or polish the hook of a song. What songs? I have a song called Ongoes: Iody. It simply says: I don't want anybody else, I only want your body. Put your mind on my body, and I will put my mind on your body. What would you be doing right now if it wasn’t for your music career? I would be working in the IT field as an architect/engineer.

  11. Where have you performed? I haven’t performed recently. When I was in a group with my cousins, we would dine at different clubs. What are your favorite and least favorite venues? There isn't a favorite or least favorite in my life. I assume that’s because I have yet to encounter a particularly appealing means of expressing my opinion on that subject.

  12. Do you have any upcoming shows? I do not have any upcoming shows, but I am available for booking engagements.

  13. How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business? The internet has made the process of distributing music a lot easier. With everything becoming digital, there is no need to manufacture materials for a product.

  14. What is your favorite song to perform? My favorite song to perform would be Who Am I and My Sound for now.

  15. Which famous musicians do you admire? Some of the famous musicians I admire include Kanye West and H.E.R.

  16. What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into? I cursed a high school teacher because he wouldn't let me leave the restroom. I was suspended from high school and I had to deal with my dad. My dad was a no-nonsense guy.

  17. What is the most valuable advice you have been given? My mom's advice is the most valuable advice I have ever received is from my mom. There was a time when I was fired 11 times straight. I couldn’t understand why this was happening. As far as I was concerned, there was nothing I had done to deserve it. My mother told me those jobs weren’t meant for you. I am beginning to understand she was right. Whenever something bad appeared to happen, there was always something better around the corner. So when I face adversity, it doesn’t shake my faith. I’ve had too much practice.

  18. If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be? If I could change anything about the industry I would increase the price of a stream. A fraction of a penny is a ridiculous crime. Smiling!

  19. What’s next? The next phase is to constantly test how high the bar is for me. This story is about testing the limits you thought existed, then realizing there were no limits. Now it’s about manifesting the limitless reality of your thoughts.

  20.  What should the world know? Being a foster child before the age of 1 was a humble beginning for me. I have been tested through countless tests in my life and now I’m ready to share my testimony.
