Desmond Lewis is on the rise
Desmond Lewis was born and raised in Mullins, South Carolina. He has been blessed to have music on both sides of his family. He has always had a love for music and he knew that one day he would pursue a career in music. Desmond just never knew what my position in music would be. Over the years, I have developed as a musician and a music producer. He has gained a perspective that embraces many genres. When he makes music, he makes it from the heart. He tries to tell my story and give my perspective on the music he creates.
How did you get started in the music business?
I got started in the music business once I became a musician and knew what I wanted to do in music, and that was to become a music producer.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
The music I compose is usually full of passion; something you can feel. If the music feels comfortable, you gravitate towards something that has been heard or experienced in the beat or song, whether it's the chords or the riffs. That’s the type of music that keeps me motivated and wanting to create more.
What is the current project about?
The current project that was released last year was called Embrace The Perspective (currently on most platforms such as Apple Music, and Spotify just to name a couple) and that was just simply an instrumental EP that highlights a few genres of music that I love.
How do you feel it will inspire others?
It gives off positive vibes and energy that will encourage others. I also hope that it will inspire other musicians to put their own projects out someday and create a fanbase.
What is your creative process like?
My creative process is relatively simple. I’ve developed an open mind to pull inspiration from anywhere I possibly can. For example, I can be watching a Netflix TV series and I can hear something that sparks an idea; then I go to the laptop and record that particular idea and just let it sit until I hear other elements that I can build around that idea.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
I would love to collaborate with Timbaland. It doesn’t necessarily have to be an official collaboration for me lol. I would just love to be in a room with him and be a fly on the wall. This will enable me to observe, learn and absorb all the gems he has to offer.
If you had the opportunity to open a show for any artist who would it be?
If I were given the opportunity to open a show for any artist, it would be H.E.R... I love her as a musician. I consider her a substantial contribution to R&B.
What is one message you would give to your fans?
The one message that I would give to my fan base is that it doesn’t matter how long it takes to achieve something; just as long as you get the job done. That’s all that matters.
What is the most useless talent you have?
Lol, I don’t think I’ve discovered that side of me yet. I’m sorry
Do you sing in the shower? What songs? What would you be doing right now if it wasn’t for your music career?
I definitely sing in the shower lol I sing some of everything… from Gospel to R&B to Country. Some of my most memorable melodies for beats have come from a shower session lol. On a more serious note, I think I would spend my days working a nine-to-five job, coming up with ideas to maybe start my own business. Entrepreneurship is increasingly relevant in this era.
Where have you performed?
What are your favorite and least favorite venues? I’ve only appeared in areas that are considered local and close to my hometown. I need to perform out of town and experience different aspects as a musician and performer.
Do you have any upcoming shows?
I don’t have any upcoming shows at the moment.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
I think the internet as well as the younger generation have changed the game all around. You no longer need a major label to put music out and promote it. There are several platforms on social media that allow you to do that.
What is your favorite song to perform?
My favorite song as a musician to perform is probably Jill Scott’s “The Way”; playing those keys in an electric piano sound while the singer captivates the crowd.. what a vibe!!
Which famous musicians do you admire?
It’s too many to name, but for the sake of his interview/questionnaire, I’ll give it a shot lol.. just to name a few the musicians are: H.E.R. , Jazmine Sullivan, Tank, D’Angelo, Musiq Soulchild, Beyoncé; and the list continues on for sure.
What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?
Well, see here’s the thing Longe Magazine, I’ve always been an angel LOL..Nah seriously as a kid I had my moments just like everyone else but not many though. As soon as my parents got a hold of me, that was the END of my shenanigans! LOL. To answer the question, I think it was when I was in fifth grade. A report card was issued after school between the hours of six and eight. When I got my report card, my parents saw that I had an F for nine weeks. Let’s just say it was a rough time for me lol. They monitored me constantly until I did better.
What is the most valuable advice you've ever received?
I think the most valuable advice I’ve been given was to never give up and apply yourself. Whatever you wanna do in life, make sure you see it to the end; regardless of whether it works out or not, you or anyone else can’t say you never tried.
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
I would change some of the ways that artists, musicians, and producers get certain deals. If I could, I would create more opportunities for everyone. I would make direct sources to executives and A&Rs easier to reach; thus making music submissions more likely to be solicited.
What’s next?
Creating more music, continuing to promote myself, and continuing to study the business. I know that I can’t dwell on the things that I’ve achieved thus far. I gotta sit for a minute, reflect on how far I’ve come, thank God for it all, and get back to it. I gotta keep working and continue to do the work, and lay the foundation; one day it’ll pay off.
What should the world know?
The world should know that this is only the beginning of my journey! Chapter one of Martel Productions has only just begun.
