Question and Answer With Artist:
-
How did you start in the music business?
I started in the music business producing songs for Da' Gatherer, who is my father, and collaborated with producer and songwriter Tim Jackson in 2000.
-
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
There currently isn't a genre that captures the essence of my style of music, so I've created my own. My style showcases a fusion of Soul, Gospel, Hip Hop, R&B, and Pop elements. I frame it as "New Soul Fuzion".
-
What is the current project about?
This project has sentimental value for Da' Gatherer and myself. The lyrics were birth out of the loss of my mother from complications of COVID. During this period, Da' Gatherer started writing lyrics about being (closer) to God during this dark season. When he shared with me, I reached out to another lyricist and he and I put the final touches on the project now known as "Closer".
-
How do you feel it will inspire others?
Although this project centers on to desire to be closer to God during the loss of a loved one, anyone who has suffered loss could relate to this song.
-
What is your creative process like?
I think of a melody in my head (even if I'm watching TV or if I'm listening to other songs). First, I play the melody (piano or a clip of sampled music). Then, create the drum beat starting with the kick drums, and snares, then fill it with the percussions that make it pop. After that, I would fill it with a bassline (regular or 808). Last, I would fill it with sources of orchestras (strings, guitars, & brass). I have a few artists that I consider my thought leaders and will share my draft product with them to get feedback.]
-
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
I would love to collaborate with Kirk Franklin, Drake, Dr. Dre, Kanye West, David Foster, and Stevie Wonder (genius).
-
If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?
It definitely would be Kirk Franklin, Drake, Beyonce, Reba, & Billie Eilish
-
What is one message you would give to your fans?
Thank you for supporting this vision that I have. I would also say thank you for demonstrating that there is still space for inspirational music.
-
What is the most useless talent you have?
I can rub my belly, tap my head, and sing at the same time LOL
-
Do you sing in the shower?
What songs? What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career? Yes, I sing in the shower LOL. I mostly sing gospel songs to perfect my craft vocally. I probably would just continue to labor like handyman work.
-
Where have you performed?
What are your favorite and least favorite venues? I've traveled to perform in France, Germany, Canada, and The Bahamas. The Bahamas cruise ship and Canada Cafe Shop were by far my favorite and the least was in France. Even though most of them were church venues, the experience made it the least.
-
Do you have any upcoming shows?
As of right now, I'm more focused on producing songs for artists.
-
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
Very much. I've engaged with fans I didn't even know they were fans of my music. So I'm grateful for that.
-
What is your favorite song to perform?
I like to perform a song that I'm featured with an artist that I'm working with now. He goes by D.C.inthaBuildin and the song is called "Ova Here".
-
What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?
I've been very blessed that I followed the teachings of my parents. I'm a black man who hasn't had any experience with drugs, alcohol, or incarceration. The most trouble I've been in is debating with my father about who is the greatest singer of all time (He's old school LOL).
-
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
Never give up on your dreams. If you first don't succeed, Try again until you master it.
-
What’s next?
For me, I focus on wanting to work with other artists (mostly mainstream). P.S. Drake, let's collab man.
-
What should the world know?
PBX creates great music that can reach the masses.
