The Billboard Artist Gina Cutillo is Back

How did you start in the music business?
I always loved to sing and as a kid, I was obsessed with musical instruments, especially the guitar. I knew this was what I wanted to do. My start was with my first rock band Supergenius. We played the whole NYC CBGB circuit. We were part of that whole Long Island Music Awards with Joan Jett & Eddie Money. The band and I were up for a few awards and I was awarded Best Female Vocalist. Joan Jett handed me my award. I didn't know I was getting into the business. I just knew I wanted to write music and perform it for the masses. The business eventually sucked me in and I would say I got very involved in pushing my career and getting my real start when I became a solo artist under my name "Gina Cutillo".
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Commercial pop/rock. I love big choruses. I love writing hooks and songs that have lyrical content but can be relatable to a big audience. I usually say “stuff you would hear on the radio” lol
I have a couple of projects working on right now. I'm being considered as an opening act for a concert at Hollywood Bowl, which is fun. I’m writing “Gina Cutillo” music and working on the business end of my career but also diving into producing We played the entire NYC cbgb circuit.r bands. Most recently Blue Light Effect with Craig Siegelbaum and Vinny Verzino. That has been so much fun. They are gifted talents and songwriters so naturally I was attracted to what I heard and knew I could help bring it to another level. This is the first time I have produced music that wasn’t under my name. It has been very time-consuming but a nice break from myself. It's always inspiring to work with other accomplished musicians. My producer David Caggiano has taught me so much throughout the years it feels good to give out what I have learned and perfected to other artists. Now I’m ready to get back to more GC music. I have a bunch of songs unreleased so it’s time to give the love to my babies.
Well-written songs and great music always inspire people. That's why they say music is the language of love.
What is your creative process like?
My creative process varies. The type of song will depend on whether I want it to be electronic or authentic (real instrument). I will either pick up an acoustic guitar and start playing and a melody comes into my head or if I want a more dance/pop type of song I start with a synth sound and a beat. Then I just dive into it all. In most cases, I also incorporate them into processes. Melody first! I may have a lyric or a couple of words I play around with, but my main focus is melody, the hook. Once I think I have a great chorus I make it the verse and write an even better chorus! I learned that from an amazing songwriter. Some songs come quickly from music to words like my song “Fly” and “Brand New Start” that was done within a half hour others like “Christina” needed a little more love and attention but that’s probably because I decided I needed a full up brass section in the chorus and bridge haha I’ve never written music for horns. It was fantastic!
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Oh… this is a good question. Here it goes... Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Beyoncé, Linda Perry, Snoop Dog, P!nk, haha the list would be long. I love making music and have collaborated on a couple of my songs “The Inside”. I wrote that with Pete Nappi (he produced Gayle's abcdefu song). Working with him in LA changed my whole approach to writing songs. Watching him work was amazing. I got back to NY and thought wow time to step it up. I came home and wrote my Billboard hit "Keep On". As an artist, it is imperative to work with others. It helps you stay challenged.
If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?
I have been very blessed in that I have shared stages with some very talented performers. Prince was the biggest! Nothing can compete with that and I only danced for him. Lol, I’ve also toured with Katy Perry, Gym Class Heroes, Paramore, and more. Right now I would say Halsey or oh oh I’m totally in love with this new rock band from Italy Måneskin. Would love to do some shows with them. Billie Eilish too.
What is one message you would give to your fans?
Be good to others. Try compassion before aggression.
What is the most useless talent you have?
Useless? LOL, I can pinch people with my toes. It hurts!
Do you sing in the shower? What songs? What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
Of course, I sing in the shower. I have come up with some of my best parts when fine-tuning a new song, in the shower. But I think you mean for fun and yes sometimes. I usually sing whatever song I just heard on TikTok.
Where have you performed?
What are your favorite and least favorite venues? I have performed all over from Denver to Texas to Georgia etc on Warped Tour, it was super grueling and amazing. Lots of fun times on Katy Perry’s bus. I’ve also performed in so many clubs, dive bars, and big venues. My least favorite is a sports bar because of the obvious that most are just there for the games.
Do you have any upcoming shows?
I’m working on a few new dates, so stay tuned. Maybe LA Hollywood Bowl.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
Well, the internet not only impacted but changed the face of the music business forever. It essentially imploded the record labels. File sharing, downloading and now we have streaming. It became harder for the labels to make money on actual music. Which in turn affected the artist. But it also helped independent artists get out there like me and make waves. The hard thing is there is so much content out there and a lot harder to be recognized or discovered. You have to be authentic but also make so much noise you are heard louder than the others. It's not easy but if you love what you do it will happen.
What is your favorite song to perform?
Omg!! That is so hard to say! Usually, my newest songs are because they haven’t had a lot of stage time and they feel fresh to me. However I do love performing: Fly, Brand New Start, Christina, Kiss Kiss oh Imma start naming my whole setlist. I loved performing “Save Us for Another Life” the song I’m featured on with “Blue Light Effect” The singer Vinny came on stage with me- it was great! I love the energy two people singing together brings. An audience always loves a good duet!
What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?
Oh, you’re bad! You want the dirt. Ok, I was visiting family in Florida and took my very young niece and nephew at the time to the Kennedy Space Center. I’m pretty obsessed with space and wanted to see everything, like everything. So I gave us my own tour. I guess they run high security there, I also opened a door that led to the facility’s intense camera room with all sorts of authorities… needless to say they were not happy, took my camera but let me go after lots of questioning. It was truly innocent and truly stupid of me. Lol, My niece still tells this story to this day! She’s 24! 😂
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
Think out of the box, if what you’re doing isn’t giving you the results you desire then change what and how you’re doing it. Be true to yourself. Align yourself with good people. You will and should be the best person that can “sell” yourself. Also - This is a business in the end, to the companies, and the funders it’s about money. No amount of money or fame is worth your soul or integrity so don't do things that feel dirty to move ahead.
Be genuine. Keep writing songs, and work on your craft. Create a brand!
What’s next?Ahhh that is something I am constantly asking myself. More music maybe with some rawness. More commercial placements. Love hearing my music on TV. It’s such a nice treat when I’m cleaning my house. Bigger performances. Another hit song.
